We had a HECK of a storm come through here yesterday. I was at work, and there were trees snapping off on base, so I emailed Kristine and let her know it was coming. I told her I figured she had about 30 mins until it hit (27 miles away). She later told me it was about 12 minutes until it hit. And boy did it hit! Our giant mulberry tree in front of the house twisted so bad that it split in half! Luckily, it was the half away from the house, and (so far) has not damaged anything. The half of the tree still standing could still fall on the house, but unless we get a strong wind it should hold up until the tree guy can come and cut the whole thing down. Too bad, too. I guess we're actually kinda pleased (again, so far) with how it fell. It could have been a LOT worse. A guy from the sawmill down the road came by...he figured that on one of the limbs that fell, a 6 foot section probably weighed about 3 tons!!!! That would do some damage! Here are the pictures of the ex-oldest Mulberry in Illinois:
Here's another mulberry on our property that got nailed!
...and a BEAST of an oak down the road that got leveled, too.... what a storm!
Our garden got flattened as well. The corn is probably all shot, sunflowers gone...the rest of it may be recoverable.
And, finally, a look at the average corn field in our area. The farmers are just devastated. I guess that's what insurance is for!
