Our Honeymoon could not have gone any better. We left at around 0200hrs on the 15th of January to the big island of Hawaii. We stayed at Kilauea Military Camp in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, right along the rim of Kilauea Volcano. We had a one bedroom cabin, with a fireplace for the week. The weather was 80 degrees and sunny [just about] the whole time. We rented a little white Dodge Neon, and got into KMC around 2000hrs on the 15th. It was a long day of flying! It sure is pretty flying over all the islands of Hawaii; they are full of deep valleys, waterfalls, and even snow-capped mountains. We were happily surprised to see a bottle of champagne and two glasses set out in our room for us, when we checked in. Sweet! Jake made a fire in the fireplace, and as soon as we got relaxed in front of the fire, with our glasses of champagne, wouldn't you know it, the fire alarm goes off! (No, we didn't forget to open the vent, there was none.) So, now the Fire Department shows up and had to turn the sucker off, and suggested that we open a window. Heh. And, of course, before the evening was through, in true "Ryun" tradition, Jake impressed his beautiful new wife with an impressive fart, complete with a squat-dip, for added umph! The morning of the second day, Jake got up bright and early, got some things straightened up, and woke Kristine up to go to breakfast. Kristine gets out of bed, stretches, and comes out into the living room, in a T-Shirt and undies, and in her most groggy morning-voice says, "I'm ready!". Haha. After breakfast, we drove around the Volcano National Park, and took a few hikes through old Lava Fields, and out to some native petroglyphs. On one of the hiking adventures, Kristine showed off her gracefulness by tripping all over the place, like she just got a new pair of feet! Souvenir shopping filled the rest of the day. That night, we had a lovely Hawaiian dinner, and went to a real-live Luau. It was pretty neat. The 17th, we took off for the Northeast corner of the island to go horseback riding for the day. We had called in advance, and booked a 5 hour ride with Waipio Ridge Stables. We were the only ones booked for the day, so when we showed up, the guide asked us how set we were on the "5 hour" thing. We told him we were pretty flexible, so it ended up being an all-day excursion. It was a hoot! The guide was a riot! He was about 40 years old, a native, and FULL of stories. That man talked the whole first 4 hours, I kid you not! He talked about when he was a boy, hiding from land-owners in the sugar canes, getting drunk (and high...heh), and who knows what else!? He was great with the land, though. He know Herbs for 'whatever ails ya'. He cut us fresh sugar cane to try, picked and cracked us wild macadamia nuts, and he brought some locally baked banana-nut bread for a snack along the way. We rode up above the Waipio Valley and saw a 1000' waterfall, and later along the trip, we stopped at a hidden waterfall and had a picnic-lunch below it. It was amazing. While up there, he picked us some seeds from a plant that have a natural hole in them, so we made a necklace out of it. He said it was the only way to get the seeds through 'customs' at the airport. We saw a mongoose along the trail, too. On the drive back to KMC that night, we noticed two things. The radio stations are terrible in Hawaii, and there are no out-of-state license plates. Go figure, huh?
